Eddie Howe has issued a positive update on Bruno Guimaraes’ ankle injury.

The Newcastle United midfielder rolled his ankle during the opening stages of the 1-0 win over Fulham at St James’ Park on Sunday.

He attempted to continue but was in tears as the half-time whistle approached. The Brazilian was replaced by Allan Saint-Maximin at the break.

Guimaraes was pictured after the match on crutches and wearing a protected boot but the injury isn’t as bad as first feared after positive scan results.

“He’s OK,” Howe said. “He was devastated to come off the pitch and probably thought at the time he had serious damage to his ankle.

“Hopefully the scan did come back with positive news. I say hopefully because until the player’s back, you never quite know. Hopefully it’s not a long-term injury.

“He’s made good progress this week, so we’ll see.”

The 24-year-old won’t feature against Crystal Palace tomorrow (kick-off 5:30pm) with Jonjo Shelvey (calf), Matt Targett (heel) and Emil Krafth (ACL) also ruled out.

Elliot Anderson, however, could return after missing the last few weeks with a calf injury.

“He trained yesterday, and trained well,” Howe said. So I was pleased to see him.”

A win at Selhurst Park will see the Magpies open up a eight-point gap over fifth place Tottenham Hotspur.
