On Saturday, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claimed Guimaraes had agreed a new deal on Tyneside until 2028, which includes a release clause in excess of £100million,

However, Magpies’ head coach Eddie Howe stayed tight-lipped over Guimaraes’ proposed new contract. Asked about the midfielder’s situation after the game, Howe said: “Everything has been going on away from me, I’ve just been focusing on the game.”

Guimaraes has previously revealed his desire to remain on Tyneside.

“I feel at home here,” Guimaraes said last season. “I’m very happy to be here to be playing and be part of this giant club’s story. For me it’s important and everyone knows how much I like the club, the fans, the support. For me, it’s like having something to remember my country [Brazil].”
