The Brazilian made his first Newcastle appearance since May as his side lost 2-0 to Yokohama F. Marinos at the Japan National Stadium in Tokyo on Saturday. Guimaraes missed the opening three weeks of pre-season after being handed extra-time off for competing at the Copa America.
It was feared by some that Guimaraes had played his last game for the Magpies due to his £100million release. Arsenal, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain were linked with a move. However, that expired at the end of June and is now set to remain at St James’ Park for his third full season.

“I'm glad to be back and more prepared than ever to have a brilliant season and to help Newcastle reach the highest possible position!”
Guimaraes captained Newcastle against Yokohoma before being withdraw at half-time in a pre-planned substitute.
He added: “Another dream has come true! Being the captain of this team is everything I've always dreamed of but never imagined! We're in this together, and I'm sure I'll be more dedicated than ever to this badge.”

When asked about Guimaraes’ leadership qualities, Howe said earlier this week: “Yeah absolutely, I think you get different types of leader. I think Dan [Burn] is an obvious one because he's very vocal in training and in games but also a leader by example in terms of how he acts. Bruno is very different to someone like Dan but still has leadership qualities without a doubt.
“He's so passionate, so driven every day to be his best but also for the team to win. They're also hallmarks of a great leader.”
