But as half-time approached, Guimaraes knew his afternoon was over.
The 25-year-old was in tears as referee Robert Jones signalled the half-time whistle and had to be comforted by Joelinton and Sean Longstaff.
He was replaced by Allan Saint-Maximin with the scoreline goalless.
Magpies head coach Eddie Howe will provide a further update on Guimaraes after the game.
