Eddie Howe has praised Bruno Guimaraes for his ‘lovely gesture’ after he urged Newcastle United fans to vote for Miguel Almiron as the Premier League’s October Player of the Month. The Brazilian, alongside teammate Kieran Trippier, was also nominated for the monthly accolade.

However, while Guimaraes revealed his pride at being recognised, the 24-year-old took to social media to ask supporters to vote for Almiron instead after the Paraguayan enjoyed a magical month by scoring six goals in six games - including standout strikes against Fulham, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.

Guimaraes said: “Very proud to be running for the best of the month again but I wanted to ask you to vote for Miggy, even if me and @trippier2 are doing well, Miggy is living his dreams.”

Howe, asked about Bruno’s post, said: “That was a lovely gesture from Bruno. I don’t think there was any game attached to that, he was genuine in his love for Miggy and feels Miggy deserves the accolade but it does sum up Bruno and in part, it does sum up the team.

“We’re working as a team at the moment, we’re not working as individuals or self-gain. It’s all for the benefit of the club and hopefully we can elevate our status as a team.”

A few hours later, all eyes were once again on Guimaraes’ social media pages after he uploaded a photo with Alan Shearer with the caption: “Meeting the legend! What a pleasure to meet you @alanshearer.” The midfielder chatted with the Newcastle’s record goalscorer at his home.

“It’s amazing, two legends together,” Howe said. “It would have been an amazing moment for Bruno to meet Alan and an amazing moment for the Newcastle supporters to see two icons together.”

Guimaraes has not hidden from his desire to become a Newcastle legend, and who better to speak to than Shearer himself. “There is a long way to go,” Guimaraes said recently. “I love playing here, I love to bond with the fans, and I want to become a legend here.”
