Bruno Guimaraes was back at Newcastle United’s training ground on Monday morning after withdrawing from the Brazil squad.

The 24-year-old linked up with his national side just days after his comeback from a hamstring injury in the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth.

Guimaraes got through 72 minutes at St James’ Park and was expected to get further minutes under his belt against Ghana and Tunisia.

However, the midfielder was forced out of training last Wednesday with a thigh tweak and wasn’t risked versus Ghana, despite being named as a substitute.

Brazil boss Tite hoped Guimaraes would come back into full contention for Tuesday’s friendly against Tunisia but has instead returned to Tyneside for further assessment.

Guimaraes left Brazil’s camp in France on Sunday and wasted no time in returning to Newcastle’s Benton training base, as publicised by the player on Instagram.

The former Lyon posted a short video from the club’s training ground gym, which included an exploding head emoji.

With reports that club-record signing Alexander Isak is set for a three-week spell on the sidelines and Chris Wood struggling with a rib injury, the Magpies will hope to have Guimaraes and Callum Wilson available for Saturday’s trip to Fulham.

Allan Saint-Maximin, meanwhile, is set to be touch and go after suffering a minor setback in the build-up to United’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth last time out.

“Callum’s doing very well,” head coach Eddie Howe said. “We’re really pleased with his progress.

“He was close for today but we made an early decision that it would have been too big of a risk, so we hope, with a bit more time, there’s a chance the next game will be good for him.

“With Allan, it’s slightly different. He has had a very minor setback with the physio.

“Whether or not he’ll be fit after the international is slightly unclear, but’s certainly not long-term. It’s not clear if he’ll be fit for our next game yet.”
