Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes admits he is carrying an ankle injury ahead of next weekend’s Premier League clash at Aston Villa (kick-off 12:30pm).

The Brazilian lasted the full 90 minutes as the Magpies beat Brentford 2-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium. Ivan Toney’s penalty opened the scoring on the brink of half-time but an own goal from David Raya and a strike from Alexander Isak completed the turnaround for Eddie Howe’s side.

“In the warm-up I twisted my ankle so now I get some time to rest,” Guimaraes told the Shields Gazette. “I don’t know if I can say it but it is ...... off with my ankle. “I need to get some rest and see at the end of the season what we can do but I am not happy with my ankle.”

The 25-year-old has been nursing an ankle injury since being withdrawn at half-time in the late win against Fulham back in January. He required pain killers to get through the match in West London.

“I got some pills but the first half was very tough for me,” he admitted. “[Second half], I think I improved my game and helped my teammates to get the result.”

Following a run of three games in six days, the Magpies now have a week’s rest before visiting Villa Park on Saturday. And Guimaraes expects to be in contention.

“I will be okay [for Aston Villa], of course,” he added. “Three games in a week and nine points, which is exactly what we needed. The second half was massive, we played very well and of course we are so proud to get three points here.

“It is difficult to play here but for the second half we deserved to take three points.”

Third place Newcastle are nine points ahead of Unai Emery’s Villa, who sit sixth having won six of their previous seven fixtures.
