Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has opened up on his ambitions for the Magpies and his relationship with the club’s supporters as he prepares for international action with Brazil.

The former Lyon star is in the Seleção squad for World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Bolivia over the next two weeks - although the five-time winners have already secured their place in Qatar later this year.

Bruno earned his fourth Brazil cap when he came on as a substitute in a 4-0 win against Paraguay just days after he had completed a surprise move to Tyneside.

With the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Juventus all showing interest in securing his services in the past, Newcastle pulled off something of a coup in making the 24-year-old a high-profile addition to Eddie Howe’s squad.

“From now on, it’s a team to compete for to be champions of the Premier League.”

Speaking to Brazilian publication Globo ahead of Thursday night’s game against Chile, Bruno revealed how high his ambitions are for his time at St James Park and believes United can push for major honours in the coming years.

“It was a risk, but I also believe in the project,” he explained.

“The fans are passionate about the team, it’s too different.

“We reinforced each other well. Next season I believe it will strengthen very well to seek, who knows, a spot in the Champions League, in the Europa League.

“From now on, it’s a team to compete for to be champions of the Premier League. I believe a lot in the project and I hope that everything works out as it was passed on to me.

“Taking the example of Manchester City, Agüero, Yaya Touré and David Silva were all names consecrated in the history of the club because they believed in the project from the beginning.

“Here I came in with Kieran Trippier, who left Atletico Madrid as champions to be here.”

“The fans are passionate about me”

Bruno’s relationship with the St James Park faithful was already in full bloom before he made his debut as a late substitute in a 3-1 win against Everton last month.

After making four more substitute appearances, the midfielder marked his full debut with a stunning goal in the 2-1 win at Southampton and made two further starts against Chelsea and Everton.

The adulation from United supporters has brought about a new feeling for Bruno as he settles into life in the Premier League.

“The fans are passionate about me, which is something I didn’t even have at Atlético Paranaense where I was an idol and won one of the main titles in the club’s history.

“The fans here have already made music for me, shirts with my photo on too.

“If I give a backward pass, it’s “Bruno! Bruno! Bruno!”
