Bruno Guimaraes gave Newcastle United and Brazil an injury scare on Wednesday evening during his preparations for the Qatar World Cup.

The midfielder is currently in Italy at Juventus’ training base with his national teammates before flying over to the Middle East ahead of their tournament opener against Serbia on Thursday.

But Guimaraes had Magpies supporters panicked when footage showed him to be in some discomfort following an innocuous challenge from Liverpool’s Fabinho.

The 25-year-old, accompanied by the physios, limped off the pitch and had to get his boot taped up after it split following the coming together with Fabinho.

Fortunately, Guimaraes was able to finish the session but Newcastle fans haven’t heard for definite whether or not their popular Brazilian is OK.

However, it appears the £35million January signing from Lyon has confirmed he is just fine after posting on Twitter: “Having fun with my work!! We follow the preparation.”

The World Cup in Qatar is Guimaraes’ first World Cup following his rise from Athletico Paranaense to Lyon and now Newcastle. Speaking about his call-up, Guimaraes said: “We didn’t know if I would be in the squad. Everyone asks this but in Brazil we don’t know, we only find out on the day, watching television like everybody else

“It was tremendously emotional. I think everyone’s seen the video with all my relatives and family. It’s traditional in Brazil for all the players to watch the squad announcement before the World Cup. I genuinely didn’t know beforehand.”
