Bruno Guimaraes slams Manchester United incident in wordless Newcastle United post

Bruno Guimaraes has voiced his frustration over the refusal to award Newcastle United a first-half penalty during 3-2 defeat at Manchester United.

The Magpies were trailing 1-0 to Kobbie Mainoo’s 31st-minute opener when Anthony Gordon went down in the area. Referee Robert Jones waved away the appeals. And while replays showed Gordon’s back heel was clipped by Sofyan Amrabat, VAR failed to intervene.

Still images have since emerged on social media of Gordon’s sock being ripped from Amrabat’s challenge. The photos were shared by Guimaraes, who replied with a zipped faced emoji.

Meanwhile, Gordon said: "I have watched it back and it is a clear penalty. I don't mind the referee getting it wrong on the pitch, but I don't understand the point of VAR. He [Sofyan Amrabat] goes down my Achilles and pushes me in the back.

"I knew straight away, that is why I didn't appeal. I waited for the VAR to check, I told my team-mates 'it was a clear penalty'. I don't understand the point of it, either get rid of it or get better - it's that simple.

Gordon did go on to equalise for Newcastle just after the break when he slid home Jacob Murphy’s cross. However, the scoreline was level for just eight minutes with Amad putting the hosts back in front.

Substitute Rasmus Hojlund made it 3-1 in the 86th minute before Lewis Hall’s stunning long-range strike set up a nervy end. But Man United held out to move level on points with Newcastle ahead of the final day of the season.

Reflecting on his side’s performance, Howe said: "Frustrating for us. Away from home this year our record hasn't been good enough. Familiar scene for us. We conceded poor goals and ultimately that has cost us the game.

"It was a decent performance. We looked a good team but were let down by some of our defending. Attacking-wise we were good and had a threat all game. We took our goals well. Frustrated we didn't get more. There's a chance and while there's a chance we'll give it everything we can.”
