Newcastle United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of reported target Borna Sosa, with the full-back said to be looking for a new club at the end of the season. The Magpies were linked with Sosa over the summer.

The defender joined VfB Stuttgart in 2018 and has impressed in the Bundesliga since, providing eight assists last season despite a difficult campaign for the club. Sosa’s form had reportedly attracted interest from the Magpies but a move never materialised, however they might have a second chance at snapping him up next year.

According to German outlet Bild, Sosa is looking to take the next step in his career and join a ‘bigger’ club than Stuttgart after four years in Germany. However, the Croatian will remain with the Bundesliga club for the rest of the season before searching for a new challenge in the summer.

Inter Milan and Atalanta keen

Newcastle will be eager to take advantage of Sosa’s situation, though could face plenty of competition if he continues his impressive form. Sosa is set to feature for Croatia in the World Cup this winter and an impressive tournament for the left-back could lead to plenty more interest in his services, with the report claiming that Inter Milan and Atalanta are already keen on Sosa.

With Sosa looking to join a big club at the end of the season, the Tyneside club’s pursuit may depend on whether they are able to earn European football. While they will definitely have the financial advantage over the Italian clubs, a move to the Serie A over St. James’ Park may be tempting if they qualify for Europe this season.

The 24-year-old would be a much-needed improvement to their squad depth on the left flank, with Dan Burn currently taking up that role. While the former Brighton man has been brilliant for Newcastle this season, Sosa is likely to provide Eddie Howe with a much more attacking option in defence. Burn and Matt Targett are yet to pick up an assist this campaign, while Sosa has eight in all competitions.
