Callum Wilson makes brutally honest Newcastle United admission ahead of contract decision

Callum Wilson has given an honest reflection on what could be his last season at Newcastle United.

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has labelled the 2024-25 season as one of the worst in his career.

The 33-year-old missed the opening three months of the campaign with a back and hamstring problem before suffering another setback in December.

Since returning in February, Wilson has remained fit and available but has been restricted to just one Premier League start, which was the 2-0 defeat at Liverpool.

Wilson scored during his only other start in the 3-2 FA Cup fourth win at Birmingham City but has gone a full calendar year without finding the net in the Premier League.

Callum Wilson’s honest reflection on the 2024-25 season

With Newcastle ending their 70-year domestic trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup and now on the brink of Champions League qualification, Wilson admits it has been a great campaign collectively.

However, on an individual level, the nine-capped England international shared his frustration ahead of Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Chelsea at St James’ Park.

Penning his programme notes, Wilson wrote: “For me, it’s been a mixed campaign. As a collective, it’s been one of the best campaigns and teams I’ve been a part of - yet individually, it’s been one of my worst seasons.

“I haven’t scored in the Premier League this season, which for me is unheard of. But I know there’s a goal in there somewhere. You have to be ready to grasp your opportunity when it comes and I am certain that over the next three games I will have a big part to play.

“It’s written in the stars in the stars for me to put one in the back of the net.”

Callum Wilson facing uncertain future at Newcastle United

Wilson will hope to end his goal drought in the final two matches of the campaign against Arsenal and Everton. If he doesn’t, then there’s a chance his goals in the 4-1 win at Burnley last May will go down as his last for the club.

The striker is out of contract this summer and while Newcastle are understood to have the option of triggering a one-year extension, head coach Eddie Howe can’t make any guarantees over his future.

Speaking earlier this month, Howe told reporters: “He's very much in my plans going forward. We have four games to go and he's a huge part of that.

“I think he's looked better and better in recent weeks. You have to understand Callum probably has been going through a pre-season sort of in the shop window, as in on the pitch, which is very difficult to do. But he needed the sort of the training and the game exposure to get back to his very best form. I think he's getting there now.

“I think physically, I see the Callum Wilson of old. So good signs for him. And he has stayed fit for a long period of time, which has been brilliant to see. And I think that on his long-term future, let's wait and see. Let's wait and see how he performs and how he continues to look.”

Wilson is third in Newcastle’s all-time Premier League goalscorer chart with 47 goals. At AFC Bournemouth, whom he joined the Magpies from for £20million in 2020, he netted 41 top-flight goals, leaving him just 12 short of 100 in total.
