Eddie Howe has provided a further update on Callum Wilson following Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Newcastle United No.9 missed his first Premier League game since injuring his hamstring during the Manchester City fixture.

Wilson, who has two goals in three games this season, is expected to sit out the next couple of weeks before coming back into contention.

That said, the 30-year-old is pushing for a return as quickly as possible.

“Callum is working away to get back to fitness again,” the Magpies head coach said. “It’s not a long-term injury, I don’t think it’s going to be too bad.

“We’re hoping to get him back pretty quickly but I don’t think he’ll be fit for Liverpool.”

Wilson isn’t the only injury Newcastle have had to deal with in recent weeks.

Emil Krafth has joined Jonjo Shelvey as a long-term absence, while Bruno Guimaraes was left out against Wolves due to a knock.

Howe said “We’re counting the cost of a spell where we are getting some rough luck with injuries. The lads are giving so much to the games and we’re feeling the effects of that.

“Certainly today I felt the lads emptied their tank. You could see Maxi (Allan Saint-Maximin) was running back to try and stop them scoring for 2-0 - he was one of the players on the goalline when Ryan Fraser was fouled in the build-up.

“And then, at the other end, he’s breaking a counter-attack to try and score.

“Great effort from the players but we’ve picked up a couple of injuries. I don’t know how bad they are.”
