Callum Wilson, Joelinton & Jamaal Lascelles - Newcastle United injury latest and expected return dates

Newcastle United’s current injury list and their expected return dates.

Newcastle United were dealt a triple injury blow during their 1-0 victory at Leeds United.

As Eddie Howe’s side claimed only their second three points of the season in their battle for Premier League survival, they paid the price with Joelinton, Paul Dummett and Jamaal Lascelles all withdrawing through injury.

The good news however, is the Magpies don’t play again until February 8, giving the club’s injured players time to recover ahead of Everton’s visit to St James’ Park.

Here, we take a look at Newcastle’s lengthy injury list and look at when they could potentially return:

Callum Wilson

Newcastle are, understandably, desperate to get their top goal scorer back fit - but Wilson will need to be patient in his recovery.

A calf injury sustained in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United later ruled the 29-year-old out for eight weeks, prompting the Magpies to sign Chris Wood from Burnley.

Wilson and Wood could well form a strike partnership when the former returns, which is hoped to be sometime in March.

Potential return: Early-March (at the earliest).

Matt Ritchie

Ritchie missed the trip to Leeds United after Howe confirmed the 32-year-old was touch-and-go with a knee injury.

Indeed, the left-sided player has only been available for one of United’s previous three league games, with Javier Manquillo and Paul Dummett selected instead.

However, all being well, he is likely to be back in contention for Everton on February 8.

Potential return: February 8 - Everton.

Joelinton

The Brazilian, now a cult hero among Newcastle fans, was withdrawn after 42 minutes during the win at Leeds.

Howe confirmed afterwards that it was a groin issue for the newly established central midfielder: “Joelinton has been suffering with a groin problem since I arrived.

“We have been managing him through the games. That was a big disappointment (to lose him) with the form he’s been in.”

Potential return: Too soon to say.

Jamaal Lascelles

Lascelles was enjoying one of his better performances in a tough campaign for United’s captain before he was forced to depart on 68 minutes at Elland Road.

Howe said: “Jamaal Lascelles that was a difficult one - I think it was his hamstring.

“He went down awkwardly, we will have to assess that one.”

Potential return: Too soon to say.

Paul Dummett

The Geordie defender made just his second start of the season for Newcastle at Leeds having suffered badly with a calf injury.

Naturally, given Dummett’s recent problems, there was an immediate worry that he could be set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines when he withdrew at Leeds.

However, Howe is hopeful there is nothing too serious with the 30-year-old.

Howe said: “Paul Dummett, is probably less of a surprise, as he has had limited training time since he has come back.

“I think there is a bit of fatigue. Hopefully that one is not too bad.”

Potential return: Too soon to say.

Isaac Hayden

Hayden served a one-match ban for the 1-1 draw with Manchester United, and the former Arsenal man has been out since.

That is because the midfielder underwent knee surgery late in December to correct a persistent problem - ruling him out for around two months.

Under Howe, Hayden has made just two starts - Liverpool and Manchester City - and won’t return until March at the earliest.

Howe, speaking earlier this month, said: “He’s been playing with that for the benefit of the team while not 100%, but it came to the point where the pain was getting too much.

“We anticipate he’ll be out for around ten weeks.”

Potential return: Mid-March.

Federico Fernandez

Fernandez revealed last week he was “feeling better” as he continues his recovery from a thigh injury.

While the Argentine has featured just seven times for United this term - including two substitute appearances under Howe - he remains a popular and important figure in the dressing room.

Potential return: Sometime in February.
