Eddie Howe allayed fears of an injury to Callum Wilson and explained the situation surrounding Newcastle United’s returning World Cup stars.

Out of the Magpies’ England contingent, Kieran Trippier and Nick Pope started Saturday’s friendly against Rayo Vallecano, though Wilson was left out.

It sparked concern that the 30-year-old had returned to Tyneside with the “minor strain” that was reported during the Qatar World Cup.

“With Callum, I’ve never said there is an issue with Callum, he’s fine,” Howe told reporters ahead of Tuesday’s Carabao Cup clash with Bournemouth.

Asked if those returning from Qatar- Wilson, Trippier, Pope, Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar - will play against the Cherries, Howe replied: “We’ll wait and see.

“I’ve spoken with all the international lads when they came back. Kieran and Nick were very keen to play in the game.

“Those conversations are important because those boys have had not just a physical load from being at the World Cup but the mental side of it can’t be underestimated.

“I’ll continue those conversations with the other lads and will see where we are.”

With Alexander Isak (thigh), Paul Dummett (back) and Emil Krafth (ACL) ruled out through issue, Howe admits to not having a fully fit squad.

He said: “No, we don’t have a fully fit squad. Naturally, I think there are always a couple of injuries.”

Pressed on the likes of Dan Burn, Joelinton and Miguel Almiron’s availability after being left out the matchday squad versus Vallecano, Howe said: "Wait and see when we announce the team."

Howe continued: "I think there are a whole host of things that obviously affect my choices. I’ve got a very good squad to pick from, a very good pool of players.

“Obviously I’m aware of what happened before the break, the form of the team and who was playing well. I’ve got to take that into consideration, and also what I’ve seen during the training subsequently.

“I’ll make my decision based on all of those things."
