Callum Wilson has praised fellow Newcastle United striker Chris Wood for taking - and scoring - the penalty in Friday’s 1-0 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The New Zealand international, after being brought down by goalkeeper Jose Sa, stepped up to help the Magpies claim a win that lifted them 10 points above the Premier League relegation zone.

It was Wood’s second goal in United colours following his £25million January move from Burnley. That was after witnessing an earlier goal ruled out by VAR for offside.

Indeed, Bruno Guimaraes was handed the official match of the man award for his dominant display in midfield, however Wood was Wilson’s pick.

“Woody was man of the match in my eyes,” Wilson told the BBC’s Footballer’s Football Podcast. “Great performance.

“I feel the disallowed goal gave him confidence within the game even though it didn’t count.

“He had that moment of celebration or so on before it got disallowed. It takes your game and confidence to another level and that happened to him.

“(He) won the penalty, (and) rightly took it himself.

“I feel like we’ve not had a penalty since I’ve been injured and there’s not been a situation where anyone has had to pick up the ball and take some ownership.

“Fair play to him for doing that. Sometimes it takes big balls to do that, and in a situation like that as well.

“I was wondering who would step up and take it and he put it in the back of the net. Great penalty. We got the three points.

Wilson, still recovering from a calf injury that has sidelined him since December, is Newcastle’s usual penalty taker - scoring his last one during the 1-1 draw with Norwich City in November.

And fellow podcast host and West Ham United striker Michail Antonio tried his very best to wind up Wilson, joking that Wood would retain the penalty duties when he returns.

Wilson laughed: “Basically, Woody has taken a penalty in my absence and when I’m back, I’m guessing I’ll rightly take my penalty spot back!

“It was a team game. If I’m not there then someone has to basically step up and Woody did that.”
