Callum Wilson is not fazed by the prospect of Newcastle United signing another striker during this summer’s transfer window.

Eddie Howe wants to add another centre-forward to his squad to compete with Wilson and Chris Wood for a starting spot.

Dwight Gayle is set to depart after six years on Tyneside having made just eight appearances last season - all from the bench.

It is likely Gayle would have been left out of the club’s 25-man Premier League squad had a deal for Reims’ 19-year-old star Hugo Ekitike gone through in January.

Ekitike, who scored 10 goals in Ligue 1 last season, remains under consideration by United’s transfer officials.

“Bring in who you like,” Wilson told The Sun, when asked about another striker potentially joining Newcastle.

Indeed, part of the reason why the Magpies want to sign another No.9 is due to doubts over Wilson’s fitness.

The 30-year-old made just 18 league appearances last season. He returned for the remaining three games of the campaign after being sidelined with a calf injury since December.

That said, Wilson still finished as United’s top scorer with eight goals - two of which came against Burnley on the final day of the season.

Preach what Gary Lineker said

“I’ll always back myself,” Wilson said. “That mindset got me to where I am.

“I’m going to be replaced one day, I’m not deluded. But as long as I am feeling fit and strong, I’ll do everything to keep it (the No.9 shirt).

“If anyone has ever doubted you - put on a show - like I did against Burnley and Arsenal - just to let them know.

“A reminder to everyone who hasn’t seen me for four months.

“I am not the most technically gifted player but my mentality and proving people wrong has got me to where I am.

“It’s the thing that has made me resilient to injuries and adversity.”

Wilson’s ability has never been doubted by Newcastle fans, with all in agreement over former England striker Gary Lineker’s tweet following his excellent display against Arsenal.

Lineker tweeted: “Fabulous effort from @CallumWilson who’s been excellent tonight. If he could stay fit he’d be one of the best strikers in the Premier League.”
