‘Can fit our group’ - Leeds United issue official statement amid Matt Targett transfer talk
Daniel Farke candidly claimed he will not “panic” in the transfer window amid reports linking Leeds United with Newcastle United outcast Matt Targett.
There were suggestions earlier this week that the Toon defender was on the brink of heading to Elland Road. This contrasted NewcastleWorld’s information, with sources adamant Leeds had not made an approach.
Targett has played just 11 minutes of Premier League action so would be considered surplus to requirements at St James' Park. Initially signed on loan, game time has been limited since the 29-year-old made the permanent switch in 2022.
The left-back has 18 months left on his current deal but wages are understood to be repelling potential suitors. Speaking to reporters, Leeds boss Farke was adamant that “no meetings” will take place regarding incomings.
“No special meeting for the final days,” he said amid reports of a Newcastle swoop. “We are on the same page. We don't make signings out of panic reasons. How close would be a bit too much? I like to be honest about it. I take the decision if I feel there is a player who can fit into our group.
“The financial aspect is for others to make then, if all boxes are ticked, we will do something. When we are in this position it is easier to track players. If it is a loan, then to be there not just for a few months but for the future.
“If a player is just looking for game time, it's not that easy. You can't guarantee that. There is lots of competition. Some (players) can be reluctant because we have really good players. It's always a bit tricky on loans because they know they are only coming for three months.”
Eddie Howe also predicts his squad to stay the same when the window slams shut on February 3. He said earlier today: “As we stand now, currently I don't (see anymore outgoings). But yes, things can change. But as we stand at the moment, I expect the squad to remain the same.”
