The Newcastle United midfielder is closing in on a return after five months out.

Newcastle United midfielder Joe Willock has issued a heartfelt message as he closes in on a long-awaited return from injury.

Willock last featured for the Magpies five months ago when he sustained a hamstring injury against Brighton & Hove Albion in May. The midfielder was due to return in pre-season but suffered a setback. A new Achilles injury then further delayed his comeback.

The 24-year-old eventually returned to training last week but Saturday’s 4-0 win over Crystal Palace came too soon. Willock was spotted in full training on Tuesday ahead of tonight’s Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund, and the timing of his message could indicate a potential return to the matchday squad.

Willock posted on social media: “So happy to be back with the Team. It’s been a challenging journey. I want to express my deepest gratitude to all the people who supported me during this time. Your encouragement and well wishes meant the world to me.”

Asked about Willock at his pre-match press conference, United head coach Eddie Howe revealed the player is “getting closer with every day that passed”.

Speaking on Friday, Howe said: “I want him back He’s trained this week for the first time with the group but it’s probably a bit early to have him involved in the matchday squad but he’s getting closer and he’s a huge player for us.”

Willock made 43 appearances in all competitions last season. If not back for the Dortmund clash, Saturday’s trip to Wolverhampton could mark the former Arsenal’s men return.
