Chelsea midfielder Jorginho says Newcastle United sitting third in the Premier League surprises him more than Arsenal leading the way.

Eddie Howe’s side have lost just one of their opening 15 games, where they have collected 30 points while boasting the joint-best defensive record in the division.

Jorginho witnessed first-hand the mood and momentum around St James’ Park after he was part of the Blues side that lost 1-0 on Tyneside before the World Cup break.

The Italy international admitted to being surprised by what he saw - and couldn’t resist a little remark at the North East weather.

Asked about Newcastle’s league position, Jorginho told Sky Sports Italy: “That was a surprise honestly, much more than Arsenal.

“But even in this case the coach is very well prepared and the players understood what they have to do, so the right atmosphere has been created in a place where the fans are very warm, even if it’s very cold there.”

Howe’s side next ‘Big Six’ opponent is Arsenal on January 3. Mikel Arteta’s side are the current league leaders, sitting five points above second-place Manchester City.

Before that, Newcastle resume their league campaign at Leicester City on Boxing Day before hosting Leeds United on New Year’s Eve.
