Club announce Newcastle United target has left — available on a free transfer this summer

Borussia Monchengladbach have bid farewell to Marcus Thuram as he searches for a new club this summer.

Thuram turned down a new contract after spending four years at Gladbach. He scored 44 goals in 134 games and that time established himself as a France international.

“Victory goal against Roma, doubles against Bayern and Real, derby goalscorer and many more hits! Thank you for the emotional moments it made us experience,” Gladbach posted.

“Thanks for the flag salute Thanks for four years Borussia. Only the best on your way!”

The 25-year-old is set to be one of the most sought-after free agents with Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle United among the clubs linked.

Thuram is close friends with Magpies winger Allan Saint-Maximin, who said earlier this year he’d like to see him move to Tyneside.

The pair played youth football at Boulogne-Billancourt together and have represented France at under-17s, under-20s and under-21s level.

“He is a great player and I hope we have a chance to take him here.” Saint-Maximin said. “For me, he’s a great player.

“I’ve known this guy a long time. I’ve been playing football with him when I was very young. I know all his family. He has great parents. He’s an incredible guy.”

Saint-Maximin’s comments were put to United head coach Eddie Howe, who joked: “Well done, Maxi!”

Howe added: “He’s a top player. But yeah, no more than that. He’s one that I watched in the World Cup for sure but no more than that.
