Newcastle United could be one of 16 clubs to be part of a new National League competition after official revamp plans were revealed.

Sixteen Premier League clubs are set to enter their under-21 sides along with 16 National League sides in a new competition, according to the Non-League Paper.

It is expected to be an EFL Trophy-like competition, with all games played in midweek, likely starting in November.

The eight groups of four are set to be divided regionally, with the top two in each of the quartet of groups going through to a last eight knockout.

All of the group games and knockout games to the final - last eight and semi-final - will be hosted by National League clubs.

And all of the games are set to be streamed live on National League TV.
