‘Devastating blow’ - Newcastle United player ratings as Magpies relegate Burnley from the Premier League

Newcastle United player ratings as Eddie Howe’s side beat Burnley 2-1 to relegate their hosts from the Premier League.

Newcastle United’s 2-0 win at Burnley relegated their hosts from the Premier League.

A double Callum Wilson double all-but sealed the Clarets’ fate, despite Maxwel Cornet giving them hope of a dramatic finish.

The home side’s defeat, coupled with Leeds United’s win at nine-man Brentford, condemned Mike Jackson’s side to Championship football next season.

Eddie Howe vowed to name his strongest starting XI - and made two changes from the 2-0 win against Arsenal on Monday.

Kieran Trippier started for the first time since fracturing his metatarsal during the 1-0 win over Aston Villa in February.

Meanwhile, Jamaal Lascelles partnered Dan Burn at central defence in place of Fabian Schar, who followed concussion protocols during the week.

The Magpies were rocked by an injury to Joelinton, their player of the season, inside the opening 10 minutes with the Brazilian forced off on a stretcher.

Howe made a slight reshuffle in midfield. Jacob Murphy was introduced on the right-wing, while Miguel Almiron sat in front of Bruno Guimaraes & Sean Longstaff and supported Callum Wilson.

It was Wilson who handed United the lead on 20 minutes after Nathan Collins was punished for a handball in the area.

United’s number nine stepped up to send Nick Pope the wrong way to score his seventh goal of the campaign - his first since returning from a calf injury.

As news of Leeds’ opener at Brentford filtered through to Turf Moor on 56 minutes, gaps began to open up for United - and they took full advantage.

Allan Saint-Maximin found space on the left, picked out Wilson in the middle, who cooly directed the ball into the bottom right corner.

You sensed the Clarets would at least pull a goal back, which they on 69 minutes when Cornet found fired past Martin Dubravka.

Turf Moor soon erupted when Brentford equalised against Leeds, meaning at that stage the Clarets needed just one more goal to stay up.

But that didn’t arrive, and Leeds found a winner to pile the misery on Burnley.
