The latest transfer talk from Newcastle United as the Magpies are linked with a move for a Belgium international.

Newcastle United have reportedly shortlisted Everton star Amadou Onana as a possible solution to their issues in midfield.

The former Lille midfielder has been a rare positive in what has been a difficult period for the Toffees and has quickly become a firm favourite after making a £31m move to Goodison Park in the summer of 2022.

A return of three goals and three assists in 58 appearances for Everton does not tell the whole story of Onana’s impact after he produced a whole host of eye-catching displays over the last 18 months.  His form has led to speculation the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal were all considering a move for the Belgium international.

Speaking about interest in Onana and a number of his other players, Everton manager Sean Dyche said: "We are in a position to do the best we can with the team we have got but we are in the position where if the right deal came along.  But you've seen how quiet it is in January and we are certainly not thinking of players going out of the building."

The Telegraph have exclusively revealed Onana has also been ‘discussed intensively’ in recruitment meetings at Newcastle and is seen as ‘a good option’ to strengthen Eddie Howe’s options in midfield.  The Magpies have also been linked with moves for Manchester City star Kalvin Phillips, Atalanta’s Ederson and Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich.

The reports comes as speculation over Joelinton’s future at St James Park has been discussed.  The Brazilian in now in the final 18 months of the six-year deal he signed when he joined Newcastle in the summer of 2019 and talks over a possible extension have failed to come to a successful conclusion.

The Daily Mail have reported the all-action midfielder, who is expected to miss the remainder of the season if he has surgery on a thigh injury, could leave Newcastle this summer if he fails to come to an agreement over a new deal.  Joelinton is said to be looking for an increase on his reported £70,000 a week wage and is hoping to be brought in line with United’s top earners.
