Bruno Guimaraes sent supporters into panic following Newcastle United’s 3-1 away victory at Southampton.

The Brazilian captained the Magpies as they bounced back from last weekend’s 4-1 defeat at home to AFC Bournemouth. Jan Bednarek opened the scoring the Saints but the visitors fought back via a brace from Alexander Isak and a goal from Sandro Tonali.

Guimaraes was substituted for Lewis Miley in the 79th minute but didn’t appear overly pleased when coming off. His social media post at full-time then sparked major fear among the fanbase.

The former Lyon midfielder said: “I don’t know what the future holds, but this team will always fight for the best for our club! +3 and see you next week.”

The first seven words of that sentence then forced Guimaraes to clarify comments after Newcastle X descended in chaos, speculating whether the player would be leaving St James’ Park.

“Don’t worry guys! I am talking about what happens on the pitch,” he added. “Thank you again for the support today, see you at St. James’ Park.”

Addressing Guimaraes’ withdrawal, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said: “It's a difficult team to get into at the moment. We've won 10 out of 11. So we've got some very, very good players not playing and naturally frustrated.

“Bruno didn't want to come off today, but he's been ill in the week. And I felt it was only right just to try and make sure we've got him available for next week. So, yeah, when you do get your chance on the pitch, you have to play well. I think that's the biggest thing.

“And that's my big message to everybody within the squad. If you're upset when you get your chance, play well.”
