Eddie Howe isn’t expecting injured trio Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser to return against Liverpool this weekend.

Trippier has been sidelined since February after fracturing the fifth metatarsal in his left foot, while Wilson hasn’t played this year due to a calf injury.

The end of April was mentioned as a potential return date for the pair, however Howe has cast doubt over an appearance when Jurgen Klopp’s side visit St James’ Park on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Howe admitted on Friday that Fraser was in a race against time to feature again this campaign due to a hamstring injury sustained in the recent 1-0 win over Wolves.

What Eddie Howe said

Asked if any injured players would return in time for Liverpool, Howe, speaking after the 3-0 victory at Norwich City, said: “Not sure as we speak.

“I’d probably say no off the top of my head but we’ll wait and see.”

Newcastle’s surge away from the Premier League relegation zone, where they now sit 9th in the table, means they haven’t needed to rush Trippier and Wilson back.

Saturday’s victory at Carrow Road, where Brazilians Joelinton (2) and Bruno Guimaraes were on the scoresheet, was United’s 10th victory in 2022 - form bettered only by title-chasing Liverpool.
