Newcastle United favourite Matt Ritchie has admitted he always had “unfinished business” at Portsmouth.

The 34-year-old left Tyneside alongside Paul Dummett once his contract expired in June. While the latter is yet to find a new club, Ritchie made the emotional decision to rejoin his boyhood club.

He broke through the ranks at Fratton Park in the late noughties before dropping down the divisions to forge a career with Swindon Town. Impressing there earned Ritchie a move to Bournemouth, where he shone under Eddie Howe to reach the Premier League.

Despite Newcastle being relegated in 2016, the winger jumped ship to spearhead the promotion push. Helping the Magpies return at the first time of asking - and keeping them in the Premier League ever since - endeared Ritchie to Toon fans.

The veteran now relishes the chance to do the same with Portsmouth 13 years after leaving. Ritchie told the club website: “It’s a dream come true. I’ve always had in my mind that I had unfinished business at the football club. I love the club, as we all do.

“I’m really excited for the challenge we’ve got but also excited for the personal challenge and I’m delighted that I’m back. This club has always had a special place in my heart.”

Pompey boss John Mousinho also hailed Ritchie for his top-flight experience - and backed him to become a success once again on the south coast. He added: “Everyone will know what Matt is all about because he’s had a fantastic Premier League career.

“I’m sure all the fans have tracked his incredible progress since he was last at the club and been pleased by what he’s achieved. It’s a transfer that’s been talked about for a long time and it’s amazing that we’ve been able to get it done.

“As well as playing in the top flight for a number of seasons, Matt also has plenty of experience at this level, having been promoted from the Championship a couple of times. It’s one of those signings that will provide a real boost around the place because he’s a fantastic player and in very good physical condition. We’re very excited to have him here.”
