Dwight Gayle has bid a classy farewell to Newcastle United after his move to Stoke City was confirmed.

The striker spent six years at St James’ Park - making 122 appearances and scoring 34 times, 23 of which came during the Championship promotion-winning season in 2016/17.

Gayle struggled for game time on Tyneside last season with all eight of his top-flight appearances coming as a substitute.

The 32-year-old was told by Eddie Howe he was free to find a new club, and that team is Stoke after signing a two-year contract.

Gayle, via Instagram, said: “Thank you so much to @nufc and the city itself.

“I’ve loved my time here and you really have made me and my family so welcome throughout.

“I wish you all the best in the future and look forward to watching your successes.”

Gayle becomes the third player of that promotion-winning campaign to leave Newcastle after Isaac Hayden and Ciaran Clark’s exits also.
