Eddie Howe says Newcastle United are “working as we were” until Dan Ashworth is officially confirmed as sporting director.

It’s been almost a month since it was announced that Ashworth would be leaving Brighton and Hove Albion to join another Premier League club.

Ashworth is set to join Newcastle - but talks are ongoing between the two clubs with the 50-year-old currently placed on “extended gardening leave”.

A recent report from the Athletic claims there is“no incentive” for the Seagulls to resolve the matter quickly unless there is a “compelling” financial incentive.

The two clubs meet at St James’ Park on Saturday as Howe’s side look to extend their advantage over the Premier League relegation.

Eddie Howe on sporting director role and Brighton

Howe, when asked about the sporting director appointment, said: "Until something is official and done, I’m sure you’ll be the first to hear of it.

“We’re working as we were until that appointment is made."

Without a sporting director, Howe and assistant Jason Tindall, along with Amanda Staveley and Steve Nickson, identified January transfer targets.

That is just one area Ashworth will contribute to with his impending the first of a major revamp at boardroom level.

Speaking about the lessons Newcastle can learn from Brighton, Howe said: “They got some key appointments right in terms of building the team around the players. It is absolutely cubical you get those appointments right.

“They have and of course the manager and the players play a huge part in that, I highlighted Graham and the job he has done there and right from the top it seems they have a plan and a strategy and have implemented it very well.”

When Brighton announced Ashworth’s departure in February, comments from CEO Paul Barber and chairman Tony Bloom signified his importance.

Barber said: “We are sorry to learn of Dan’s decision. He’s been an important part of the club’s senior management team since joining us from The FA, and has made a significant contribution to our club’s progress in the Premier League and Women’s Super League.

“On a personal level, I will be sad to see Dan leave as we’d developed a close day to day working relationship. Dan’s been an excellent colleague and has become a good friend as well. I wish Dan and his family well for the future.”

Bloom added: “We are extremely disappointed that Dan will no longer be our technical director. He leaves a significant legacy in place and for that we are greatly appreciative.

“Dan’s done an outstanding job and helped build on the progress the club had already made across all of our technical areas. I wish Dan and his family well for the future.”
