Eddie Howe has not ruled out one of his four goalkeepers leaving Newcastle United this summer.

Nick Pope’s £12million move from Burnley has added strong competition to the goalkeeping department, which also includes Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow and Mark Gillespie.

Dubravka is set to rival Pope for the No.1 jersey - forcing Darlow down the pecking order. Meanwhile, Gillespie, who has one year left on his contract, remains fourth choice.

When asked if one of the goalkeepers will leave, Howe, speaking after the 3-0 win over 1860 Munich, said: “I like all of them. I’ve got no complaints with the quality. I think we’ve got an outstanding group of goalkeepers.

“I think, whether we keep four goalkeepers at the end of pre-season, or the end of the transfer window, I don’t know at this moment in time. I think we’ll have to see what happens.”

Howe has taken a 30-man squad to Austria but will need to trim that number to 25 for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

However, the 44-year-old played down talk of potential departures after Isaac Hayden, Freddie Woodman, Jeff Hendrick and Ciaran Clark’s exits.

Howe said: “We’ve taken the players we feel are going to be involved, and we’ve also got a couple of young players within the group, and their futures will probably be decided a bit later on in the pre-season schedule.

“I think we’re going to need to carry a squad with the amount of games we’ve got in a short period of time.

“With the congested fixture period with the World Cup, it’s a different year. We need to be prepared for all eventualities.”
