Eddie Howe doubles down as 'harshly treated' Newcastle United man banned vs Brighton

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe will be without assistant Jason Tindall on the touchline against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Newcastle United won’t have Jason Tindall on the touchline for the Premier League clash away to Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday (kick-off 2pm).

Tindall was shown his third yellow card of the season during the second-half of the Magpies’ 3-0 win over Ipswich Town last Saturday. The exact reason for his booking remains slightly unclear.

With head coach Eddie Howe only just returning from a fortnight off with pneumonia and still not feeling 100%, Tindall took on most of the touchline responsibilities against Ipswich.

“It was great with the result,” Howe told reporters after the game. “It makes a big difference. I was lacking in energy so JT [Tindall] took most of the reins from the touchline. Obviously my ability to shout is reduced but I'm just pleased that I was able to lead the team and be back out where I love to be.”

Asked if he found it difficult to ‘rein himself in’, Howe replied: “No, not really because still, if I'm here, I'm all in and I'm leading the team.

“I think we over-egg the importance of the touchline, really, because players can't hear what you're saying anyway so you think they can, but they can't. I was just pleased to lead the team and very pleased with how we played.”

Eddie Howe doubles down on Jason Tindall treatment

It was on the hour-mark when referee Michael Salisbury jogged over to the dugout to show Tindall a yellow card. Howe witnessed the full exchange and admitted he was baffled by his assistant was booked.

“It baffles me why, to be honest, because I was right there and I saw and heard everything,” Howe said at his post-match press conference. “To a degree, I think it's aimed purely at trying to stop Jason managing, but I was the one back in the dugout so I don't see the issue.”

After leaving the press room at St James’ Park, Howe spoke to NUFCTV, where he doubled down, admitting he thought Tindall was “harshly treated”.

Howe said: “I need to speak to JT about his discipline, don’t I? I felt he was very harshly treated today I have to say. I was there and he did nothing wrong.”

Jason Tindall has already addressed ban

When speaking to NewcastleWorld ahead of the recent 4-1 win over Manchester United, Tindall was asked about his potential ban and whether he could avoid it.

Tindall replied: “I can. It's not often that I do pick up any cards. I know this season, obviously, I've picked up two yellow cards. I thought they were both probably a little bit harsh, but then I'm going to say that, aren't I? Yeah, of course. I've got a good relationship with the officials and I've got to be on my best behaviour.”
