Newcastle United are looking to loan out young star Elliot Anderson, while Matty Longstaff and Joe White could also head in the same direction.

It was a slight surprise to see Anderson remain on Tyneside whilst the first-team travelled to Saudi Arabia given the 19-year-old has been in-and-around the matchday squad in recent months.

Instead, the Scotland youth international played 90 minutes as the Magpies’ under-23s were beaten 1-0 by Nottingham Forest on Monday night.

Anderson has the subject of Football League interest, most notably Championship side Luton Town, which is the sole reason why the teenager was left at home.

Elliot Anderson likely to leave on loan

Howe explained: “With Elliot, we are looking at loaning him but nothing is confirmed on that.

“The focus of him staying behind was to be available to move and be ready to potentially join another club on a loan deal.

“We are waiting to see if that is going to happen or not.”

Matty Longstaff’s future

Longstaff is in the Middle East having linked up with the senior squad after his season-long loan spell at Aberdeen was cut short due to lack of game time.

The 21-year-old would face competition from Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Willock, brother Sean, Joelinton and Isaac Hayden - when fit - to break into the starting XI.

And that is without mentioning the impending arrival of Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes in a £33million transfer.

“We will see with Matty,” Howe told NewcastleWorld, who asked about his short-term future. “I have had limited time to view him, and assess him.

“First and foremost I will say he is like his brother, a great lad. Really enthusiastic, very passionate about the football club.

“I’ve been very impressed with him in terms of a person and human being.

“In terms of his career and the latter part of the season, we will have to make a decision in conjunction with him and see what the future holds.

There could be more loan exits

Joe White has been linked with a potential loan switch to League Two side Hartlepool United.

The Carlisle-born midfielder’s contract was due to expire in the summer, however it is understood he is set to agree fresh terms.

Howe confirmed “a few” youngsters will be leaving on loan before Monday’s transfer deadline.

He said: “We have to get that balance right, particularly with the younger players. There will be a few of the younger guys going out.

“I am sure the majority of the squad will stay intact.”
