Eddie Howe says he is “desperate” to keep Kieran Trippier at Newcastle United after the right-back made his first appearance of the campaign against AFC Bournemouth.

The England international was an unused substitute in the Premier League opener against Southampton last weekend before playing 45 minutes for the under-21s on Monday as he builds back to full fitness after his extended break for reaching the Euro 2024 final.

The 33-year-old was introduced on the hour-mark at the Vitality Stadium as United trailed 1-0 following Marcus Tavernier’s first-half opener, and the right-back played an important role as Anthony Gordon went to rescue a point.

Trippier’s outing comes just days after Howe was left mystified by stories claiming the defender wants to leave after Bruno Guimaraes was appointed team captain this week.

The United boss reiterated his desire to keep the former La Liga winner after praising his experience, quality and link up with Gordon.

“You could see his experience and technical quality which I know I talk about a lot but there are very few full backs with his ball-playing and crossing delivery,” said Howe. “He really helped us today, calmed things down and used his experience and brought a renewed threat with Anthony down our right side.

“I love Kieran as a footballer, I always have. I’ve managed him twice, which I’ve been very lucky to do and I’m desperate to keep him.”

Howe, when asked on Friday, was unable to guarantee that Trippier would stay amid reported interest from Everton and European clubs.

“I hope [he’ll stay] but I can never answer these questions with absolute certainty because its football and the transfer window is always unpredictable,” said Howe. “My wish is that he stays here and continues to play for us.”
