Eddie Howe admits he will have an “open-minded” approach to this summer’s transfer window.

With Newcastle United’s Premier League status secured and just three games remaining this season, conversations surrounding the summer have taken place.

NewcastleWorld understands the Magpies are prioritising signing a goalkeeper, centre-back, centre midfielder and a striker for next season, although remain open to all opportunities.

In January, Howe added a mix of class - Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes - and Premier League experience - Chris Wood, Dan Burn and Matt Targett - to his ranks.

And the club’s recruitment certainly paid off as Newcastle surged away from the Premier League relegation zone with 10 wins so far in 2022.

Eddie Howe staying “open-minded”

Asked if he’ll look to do the same in the summer, Howe revealed: “I’m open-minded if it’s the right player for the position. You do have to have an eye on the future.

“I don’t think you can be blind to the fact that if you have a squad that’s at the wrong ages then you can give yourself problems one, two, three years down the line. We don’t want to put ourselves in that position.

“Ideally, you want experience, players that, ideally, have played in the Premier League but, as with Bruno, who’s none of those things, he was the right signing for that position at that time.

“We will take it on an individual basis while acknowledging the fact the club will always have a future and we have to protect that.”

Lingard and Tarkowski considered

Indeed, NewcastleWorld also understands that Newcastle retain an interest in signing Jesse Lingard from Manchester United, as well as James Tarkowski, of Burnley.

Both players are out-of-contract this summer and were on the club’s radar in January. Lingard was keen to move to St James’ Park on loan but Manchester United demanded a ridiculous fee.
