Eddie Howe shock Newcastle United exit claim as head coach set to step down after five years

Eddie Howe is reportedly set to leave Newcastle United after almost five years in charge.

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe is set to leave the club.

Various reports have claimed that Howe, who took charge of Newcastle in November 2021, is set to step down as head coach ahead of the 2026/27 season.

It comes after a disappointing 12th-place finish in the Premier League last season and a frustrating summer on the transfer front. The Magpies have already sold Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, with captain Bruno Guimaraes expected to follow. Howe took charge of Newcastle in Wednesday night’s 4-1 friendly defeat at Bristol City.

But Howe will leave Newcastle as the club’s most successful manager in the modern era. After leading the club away from relegation danger, Howe qualified for the Champions League twice in four full seasons on Tyneside while also ending a 70-year domestic trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup in 2025.

According to The Athletic, Newcastle have been ‘well prepared’ for Eddie Howe’s exit and have lined up Al Ahli head coach Matthias Jaissle as a potential replacement. Al Ahli are majority owned by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund like Newcastle with Jaissle twice leading the club to the Asian Champions League.

The German previously managed Red Bull Salzburg for two years, winning two Austrian Bundesliga titles as well as the Austrian Cup. In almost 250 games as a manager, which also includes a brief spell at Austrian side Liefering, the 38-year-old boasts an impressive 66.53% win percentage.

But like all of Newcastle’s signings so far this summer, he remains young and unproven as far as the Premier League is concerned.
