'Great news' - Newcastle United supporters react to major Eddie Howe future update ahead of crunch PIF meeting
Newcastle United supporters have had their say following a huge update on Eddie Howe’s future.
Eddie Howe is set to stay at Newcastle United and plan for a big summer ahead despite a poor run of results.
That was the story broken by our sister title, The Shields Gazette, in which it was reported that Newcastle are ‘much more likely’ to sell several underperforming players than part ways with their head coach.
Howe is understood to be central to Newcastle’s summer plans ahead of the 2026/27 season and has the full support of decision-makers behind the scenes as things stand. The Magpies still have five games left to play and sit 14th in the Premier League table having lost eight of their last 11 league matches.
The club’s form under Howe this season has seen the pressure on the head coach ramp up, while some sections of supporters have lost faith and have taken to the stands, and social media, to voice their frustrations.
But Newcastle can still finish as high as fifth, where they finished last season, or as low as 18th, with five games to go. With a lot still to be decided in that respect, the club are continuing to back the manager.
On the back of that story, The Shields Gazette and NewcastleWorld team were hit with a flurry of messages and comments from supporters reacting to the news of Howe having the ‘full support’ of the club ahead of a planned meeting with the club’s hierarchy, including PIF representatives, next week.
The response was, as expected, mixed...
‘Great news’
Some supporters welcomed the news given Howe’s track record at Newcastle before the current campaign.
@ahosker: “Great news!!! Time to back the guy who brought silverware to the club for the first time in 70 years, got two Champions League finishes, saved us from relegation, turned multiple players into better ones… the list goes on… unfortunate a few fans feel they have to be completely toxic towards him.”
@MarkyRob84: “Great news in my opinion! A good summer window and next season we’ll be back on track with Eddie at the wheel.”
@Sewelld22: “Good, one bad season doesn't make a bad manager, especially when the season contained Champions League last 16 and Carabao Cup semi appearances.”
@M_Kyl3: “Things I love to see. Get this season over ASAP and let's start looking ahead, with players who are willing to run through a brick wall for the badge and their own self-pride.”
@abu685: “Eddie Howe is the right man. 100%. We had a disaster of a pre-season. We always said we couldn’t make any mistakes in the transfer market and we made a few. Biggest one was how we managed the Isak situation. We have a DOF and CEO in place this summer. This time it will be different.”
@Hendrover: “Howe burdened by Isak disruption; no CEO or Director of Football in place at start, no signings in three Jan windows, key injuries Schar, Bruno, Botman, Tino, Trippier; Hall some heads turned elsewhere; over 60 games with insufficient depth; new signings flop, Howe will sort.”
Okay - but changes needed
Others were accepting of Howe remaining in charge but want to see major changes at the club this summer.
@Pure_Belter: “I'm fine with Eddie being given the opportunity to make things right, as long as he upgrades his backroom staff — [Jason] Tindall and the other coaches are terrible, not Champions League standard.”
@awaydays25: “Common sense, the man is the greatest manager we’ve ever had in my opinion. Get rid of the deadwood and start again.”
@Googsnufc: “Not surprising the higher ups have always seemed keen to keep him. We’ll just have to see if he can fix the wrongs of last summer.”
@XxSeanNUFCxX: “Don’t have a problem with it as long as we get recruitment right in summer. We need to see major improvements and look like a well coached team again. We go again qualify for Europe next season. If he gets off to a bad start though, probably right to sack him.”
@MattWalby: “The dreaded “full support” statement. How many times has a manager been told they have the full support of their club then, a couple of bad results later, club & manager have parted ways?”
‘Sleepwalking into disaster’
@ToonArmyAlbania: “It's one thing to ruin most of my weekends with Bruce-like performances, but now you ruin my week with this news...”
@magsmighty1: “No way I’d let him loose with summer window.”
@jaffa_5: “Think the higher ups are sleepwalking into disaster. We have had a lot of tactical issues this season that Howe hasn't been able to solve; he's been too predictable, 60+ min subs for example. This was a good time for a fresh manager who can rebuild a fresh squad in their style.”
