New Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has revealed the only thing he will value as ‘success’ at St James’ Park this season.

While post-takeover talk has gone down alleyways of investment and silverware, Howe is much more pragmatic, and short-term than that.

“Success is staying in the Premier League,” said Howe.

“I am sure there will be some bumps in the road, it is going to be a real, real challenge - I am not coming here and underestimating what is in front of us.

“We have got a big gap already to try and catch the teams above us. And that's why every game we play now is of importance.”

Newcastle United head into next weekend’s visit of Brentford five points adrift from safety, winless since May and 19th in the Premier League table.
