Eddie Howe reacts to ‘very touching’ Newcastle United moment versus Crystal Palace

Eddie Howe admits he was “blown away” by Wor Flags’ tribute to Allan Saint-Maximin, prior to Newcastle United’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

In their latest flag display, the fan group showed their unwavering support for the Frenchman, who has come under criticism from sections of the fanbase following a recent dip in form.

Gold foil was used to spell the number ‘10’, while a flag dedicated to the 25-year-old was unveiled in the Gallowgate End.

Saint-Maximin saluted the Gallowgate moments before kick-off before reacting on social media. He tweeted: “I will never be able to thank you enough for this. “I will remember this day for the rest of my life! Thanks for everything!”

After injuring his calf in February before being hit with illness, the winger has struggled to regain top form, sparking some debates on social media as to whether or not United should offload him in the summer.

Howe, however, insisted the player has a long-term future at St James’ Park and is delighted to see fans are supporting him too.

The Magpies head coach labelled Wor Flags’ tribute as a “touching moment”, “intelligent and very emotional”.

He told NewcastleWorld: “I didn’t speak to Maxi personally but I know he was blown away by the display, as I was.

“I thought it showed an incredible attachment really from Wor Flags to the players.

“To give him a lift in this moment I thought was very intelligent and a very emotional thing.

“I think they’ve been incredible since I’ve been here with some of the displays and today was right up there.

“For me, the game is all about players and special players - Maxi is certainly one of those. It was a very touching moment.”
