Eddie Howe has confirmed Newcastle United remain active in the January transfer window - with his sights set on sealing signing No3.

Howe & Co have enjoyed a busy start to the winter market following the arrivals of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood from Atletico Madrid and Burnley, respectively, for a combined fee of £37million.

Both players are expected to make their Premier League debuts against Watford on Saturday afternoon - a huge relegation six-pointer at St James’ Park.

Although Howe admitted nothing was imminent in terms of further new recruits, the 44-year-old revealed the hard work is ongoing behind the scenes.

“We’re not close to signing anyone else currently,” Howe told reporters at his pre-match Watford press conference.

“The squad of players we have right now will be the squad available for Watford.

“We are looking. We’ve got time left in the window but we know we need to move quickly and try and add more players.

“Everyone behind the scenes has been working tirelessly to improve the squad and I think we’ve got two players that have done that so far. I’ve been really pleased with our business.

“It’s not about quantity and numbers, it’s about what players can bring to the team.

“Obviously, we’re still active in the market but no immediate news to give you.”
