Eddie Howe says ‘integral’ star is ‘like a new signing’ for Newcastle United amid transfer interest

Elliot Anderson is set to stay at Newcastle United this summer, despite loan interest from EFL clubs.

Elliot Anderson is “integral” to Newcastle United’s plans for the new Premier League season.

That’s according to head coach Eddie Howe, who again confirmed the 19-year-old will be staying at St James’ Park this summer - as it stands.

Anderson featured heavily for the Magpies in pre-season fresh from helping Bristol Rovers achieve automatic promotion from League Two.

A number of Football League clubs - including the likes of Sheffield Wednesday and Luton Town - had enquired about taking Anderson on loan.

And while the original plan might have been to loan the Scotland under-21s international out again, he’s played his way into first-team contention after a string of impressive performances in pre-season.

“As we stand now, he will not going anywhere,” Howe said. “He’ll be an integral part of our squad this season.”

Howe added: “Targets are sometimes difficult. I’m looking at daily progression.

“He’s come into the group almost like a new signing for us. I’ve seen a big elevation in his own performance.

“Physically, he’s been very good in pre-season, he’s come back very fit. Tactically, he’s fitted into our system. He’s a very useful player for us.

“We really like him. He’s a great character as well. He’s quite quiet within the group but has a steady determination to do well for himself and the team. We like him a lot.”

Anderson is in line for a place in Howe’s matchday squad for the Premier League opener against Nottingham Forest at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 3pm).
