Eddie Howe heaped praise on Miguel Almiron after the Newcastle United winger scored a stunning goal during his side’s 2-0 win over Burnley at St James’ Park.

With the Clarets on top in the opening stages, the Paraguayan’s moment of magic sparked Newcastle into life when he curled his shot past James Trafford from 25 yards out.

It was a strike Magpies fans have witnessed from the 29-year-old time and time before, particularly last season when he netted a career-best of 11 goals. But it isn’t just Almiron’s goals that makes him “unique”, according to Howe.

“He’s (Almiron) a unique footballer,” said Howe. “I don’t think there’s anyone better at doing what he does – all energy, all action. I’d like to see his physical stats today because I’m sure they’d be through the roof.

“The quality he showed with his finish was very reminiscent of some of the goals he scored last year. It’s a great return to form for Miggy – he’s such an important player for us.”

It was around this time last year when Almiron’s brace at Fulham kick-started a run of seven goals in seven games. Already this term, the winger has netted in two consecutive matches having found the net during last Sunday’s 8-0 win at Sheffield United.

Almiron is approaching five years on Tyneside after joining from MLS side Atlanta United for a reported £21m in January 2019. He’s made 173 appearances in total and scored 27 goals.

As a result of his excellent form last term, Almiron extended his contract at Newcastle until 2026.

Speaking about his new deal, Almiron said: “I felt at home at Newcastle from the beginning. I’ve felt very welcomed and I feel like part of the family, so I am very happy to stay here and I am going to keep giving everything on the pitch to thank the people of Newcastle.

“The truth is that I’ve worked really hard since I came to Newcastle to improve my level and to be where I am at the moment, and I also thank the staff and my team-mates, who have helped me a lot during these four years. I think this is a reward for that hard work and I am very happy.”
