Eddie Howe has defended Jamaal Lascelles after the Newcastle United captain came under criticism during the 4-0 defeat at Leicester City.

Many supporters were left frustrated following the central defender’s part in the Foxes’ opener, which came via Youri Tielemens from the penalty spot.

Lascelles lost possession whilst trying to play out from the back before James Maddison controversially flung himself to the ground for a spot-kick.

It was noticed after the match that the 28-year-old had deleted his Twitter account, though it is believed that was done prior to visiting the King Power Stadium.

What did Eddie Howe make of Jamaal Lascelles’ display at Leicester?

When asked if Lascelles retain Howe’s support as captain, the former Bournemouth boss said: “I don’t give my team away but he certainly remains the captain and has my full support in that role.

“I thought Jamal was unlucky with the penalty decision. I didn’t think it was a penalty at the time and I don’t think it is a penalty now. I don’t understand why the referee didn’t review his decision.

“I thought Jamaal contributed to us in a lot of positive aspects in the game.

“Obviously, we were disappointed to concede four goals and everyone connected with the team, forward line or defence has to shoulder that responsibility, not just our backline.”

What has Eddie Howe said about Jamaal Lascelles previously?

Howe has already talked up Lascelles’ importance to his side by highlighting his key qualities.

Speaking 24 hours before the win over Burnley, Howe said: “Jamaal is a hugely important player.

“He adds physicality and pace in our backline and they’re qualities that we need.

“He’s captain of the team, a very strong personality in the dressing room. I really like Jamaal, I think there’s a lot more to come from him.”

What’s going with Jamaal Lascelles at Newcastle United?

Excluding his commanding performance in the 1-0 victory Burnley a couple of weeks ago, Lascelles has severely underperformed this campaign.

The penalty he conceded at Leicester, albeit very harsh, was his third this term. That means he has been responsible for 50% of the spot-kicks Newcastle have given away.

As a result of his dip in performances, some fans have called for him to be stripped of the captaincy, with Callum Wilson a popular replacement. Jonjo Shelvey and Federico Fernandez have deputised under the previous head coach.

Howe, however, has vowed to sitck by Lascelles, who is now likely to play every game over the festive period - Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United - with Fernandez out with a thigh problem.
