Eddie Howe has not ruled out unleashing young duo Elliot Anderson and Joe White in Newcastle United’s FA Cup third round tie with Cambridge United.

The pair, two of the club’s most exciting prospects, have featured on the bench in the last two Premier League games against both Manchester clubs, City and United.

And there is a chance they could start against the U’s, particularly with Howe’s side first-team squad still affected by positive Covid-19 cases.

That said, even with a fully fit and available squad, it is a fixture ideal for Anderson and White on paper as United welcome the League One side to St James’ Park.

Anderson made his senior debut in the FA Cup defeat at Arsenal around this time last year, while White is yet to appear competitive, though did feature in Steve Bruce’s pre-season programme.

Eddie Howe: ‘They will be involved’

“Joe White and Elliot Anderson are very good technical players,” Howe admitted. “I’ve been really impressed with them and their attitudes as well, it’s spot on. Really, really good.

“I see a really bright future for both players here.

“They will be involved. You’ll have to wait and see the teamsheet to see whether they start the game.”

Newcastle still dealing with Covid-19 cases

On the current Covid-19 situation at the club, Howe explained: “It’s affected us again this week, so we’re certainly feeling the effects of Covid.

“Day-to-day, you become accustomed to what you do in your daily routines but it’s definitely a part of our lives here at the football club and something we’re constantly adjusting to.

“The players’ attitudes to it have been very, very good. We obviously hope for a day it’s not here and we’re free but at this moment in time, we’re applying the rules and trying to manage it accordingly.”
