Eddie Howe’s short response to Matt Targett’s Newcastle United future question

Will Matt Targett stay at Newcastle United following his successful loan spell from Aston Villa?

Eddie Howe failed to give a definitive answer over Matt Targett’s future at Newcastle United.

The left-back ended his successful loan spell from Aston Villa with a 2-1 win over Burnley, a result which relegated the Clarets from the Premier League.

Targett played every minute of the 16 games he was available for - helping the club surge out of the bottom three and into an 11th-placed finish.

United reportedly have a £15million option to buy the 26-year-old - but a decision is yet to be made following the conclusion of the 2021/22 campaign.

Asked about what’s next for Targett, Howe said: “I think it’s difficult one to give you any direction on that in respect to his club.

“We’ll wait and see.”

Targett has already expressed a strong desire to stay at St James’ Park,

“I think everyone knows what I want but it’s up to the club,” Targett said after the 2-0 win over Arsenal last week.

“It’s a massive project, an exciting project. I’m sure everyone wants to be a part of it.

“I’ve loved every single minute of it. It’s been an incredible place to play my football.”
