The EFL has confirmed the match officials for Newcastle United versus Chelsea in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup tonight (kick-off 7:45pm).

The two teams meet for the second time in four days after the Blues ran out 2-1 winners at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Sunday. Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer scored either side of Alexander Isak’s goal.

But the Magpies will fancy their chances of gaining quick revenge on home turf. Although Eddie Howe’s side are without a win in their last five league matches, they have only lost twice at St James’ Park (Manchester City & Brighton) this calendar year.

The referee taking charge of proceedings is Ashton-under-Lyne-born official Chris Kavanagh. The 39-year-old was recently the man the middle for Newcastle’s 2-1 comeback victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers last month.

Kavanagh refereed the Magpies on five occasions last season. While he oversaw the Carabao Cup win over Manchester City, his other four appearances - all of which came in the Premier League - coincided with defeats AFC Bournemouth, Tottenham Hotspur, Nottingham Forest and Man City.

Meanwhile, Kavanagh most recently refereed Chelsea’s 1-1 draw at home to Nottingham Forest. He dished out six yellow cards to Enzo Maresca’s side, resulting in a £50,000 fine from the FA.

Kavanagh will be assisted by Lee Betts and Adrian Holmes while Thomas Bramall is the fourth official. The EFL has also confirmed there will be no VAR in operation.

Whoever emerges victorious at St James’ Park will advance into the quarter-finals of the competition, the stage Newcastle reached last season before losing at Chelsea on penalities.
