Eight Newcastle United players ruled out & £12m doubt as Arsenal without £128m quartet - early team news

Newcastle United v Arsenal: The latest team news ahead of this evening’s Premier League clash at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United and Arsenal return to Premier League action at St James’ Park this evening (kick-off 5:30pm) after playing in the Carabao Cup fourth round in midweek.

And both teams had contrasting emotions. The Magpies recorded only their second win at Old Trafford since 1972 to dump Manchester United out of the competition. Arsenal, meanwhile, succumbed to a 3-1 defeat at West Ham United.

However, in the Premier League, there is a small gap between the two clubs. The Gunners are mounting a title challenge once again and know a win at St James’ Park will take them back to the top of the table.

“It speaks for itself what they achieved (last season),” said Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe. “They recruited really well in the summer. I think they have moved on from last year, mentally moved on and stepped it up.

“They are unbeaten, (and) it is a really big test of our credentials. We are going to have to find ways to make it very difficult for them but we are looking forward to the game.”

But by the same token, a win for Newcastle will see Howe’s men keep track on the top four and move four points behind their visitors.

Here’s the early team news from both camps - with Newcastle without eight players and Arsenal missing four:
