Turkish reports claim Newcastle United are considering an approach from Besiktas for Jamaal Lascelles

Besiktas are waiting patiently to learn whether Jamaal Lascelles will be allowed to leave Newcastle United.

Turkish reports claimed earlier this week that Besiktas chiefs were jetting to Tyneside to thrash out a deal for the Toon skipper. Lascelles has less than six months remaining on his Newcastle contract, worth a reported £40,000 per week.

A fresh challenge after nine years at St James’ Park could intrigue the 30-year-old, who has fallen down the pecking order under Eddie Howe. Sven Botman’s injury struggles gave Lascelles the chance to send a reminder to Newcastle fans about his importance within the squad.

He performed well when called upon but was soon demoted to the bench once Botman returned. With his contract up in May, a move appears the most plausible option to secure regular first-team football.

NewcastleWorld understands Lascelles is happy on Tyneside but has not shut the door completely on a Besiktas move. From the Magpies’ perspective, they would prefer to keep their captain as limited backup is available.

As well as Botman and Fabian Schar, Dan Burn - who plays at left-back - would be the only senior centre-back left in Howe’s ranks. They would also only receive a nominal transfer fee given his contract situation.

An update from Turkish reporter Yagiz Sabuncuoglu has claimed Besiktas have lodged a bid to Newcastle and await a response. Lascelles is three games short of reaching 250 appearances for the Magpies and, should he leave, will be remembered best for helping achieve instant promotion under Rafa Benitez in 2017.
