Newcastle United face competition from Premier League rivals Everton as they look to land Chelsea star Conor Gallagher.

The 22-year-old is believed to have been the subject of a loan enquiry from the Magpies as they look to replace Jonjo Shelvey, who is set to complete a move to Nottingham Forest after agreeing a two-and-a-half year deal at the City Ground.

The former Burnley boss was officially announced as successor to Frank Lampard and will now face a race against time as he looks to strengthen his newly-inherited squad ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed the Toffees have made an initial £40m offer for the England midfielder and that fee could raise to £45m with add-ons.

He tweeted: “Everton have submitted a bid to sign Conor Gallagher from Chelsea. It’s £40m proposal plus £5m add ons. Chelsea will make a decision soon as there are also other clubs interested in Gallagher — and player has to decide his future too.”

Gallagher’s future could depend on the outcome of Chelsea’s pursuit of Argentina World Cup winning midfielder Enzo Fernandez after the Telegraph reported the Blues had submitted a £105m bid for the Benfica star.

The Stamford Bridge club have already overseen a hectic January transfer window after they added defenders Malo Gusto and Benoit Badiashile, midfielder Andrey Santos, wingers Mykhaylo Mudryk and Noni Madueke and forward duo David Fofana and Joao Felix to their squad at a cost of around £183m.
