Newcastle United next summer transfer decision made as £18m deal made official
Newcastle United have officially confirmed the signing of Ewen Jaouen from Stade de Reims.
Newcastle United have announced their first signing of the summer with Ewen Jaouen completing an £18million move from Stade de Reims.
Jaouen arrived on Tyneside on Monday to finalise the move after Newcastle agreed a fee and a four-year deal to sign the 20-year-old goalkeeper.
It marks Ross Wilson’s first major signing since his appointment as sporting director last year.
“We are delighted to welcome Ewen to Newcastle United,” Wilson said. “This is a signing we have been working hard on for a number of months, and we are really pleased to get it over the line.
“Ewen is a hugely talented young goalkeeper who has gained a lot of admirers across European clubs, and he has an exciting future ahead of him.
“What stood out for us, in all of our discussions, was his ambition, his focus and his determination to be here. We can’t wait to watch him develop and we know our supporters will give him a warm welcome.”
Ewen Jaouen on NUFC move
On signing for Newcastle, Jaouen said: “I’m really excited to become a Newcastle United player.
“When I visited the training ground, I could see how passionate everyone is about the club and the work they do, and I loved the environment straight away. I also had the chance to see the stadium and it’s huge.
“I’ve heard so much about the supporters and how they are the best in the country. The passion of the entire city and the atmosphere at St James’ Park are famous throughout football, and I can’t wait to experience that for myself and become a true Geordie.
“As a goalkeeper, I enjoy one on one situations and playing as a modern keeper, building from the back and being comfortable with the ball at my feet. Now I want to develop alongside the amazing players and staff here, enjoy my football, and prove my value on the pitch.”
Eddie Howe reacts to done deal
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe will have to manage an overhaul of his goalkeeping department this summer.
“Ewen is a great addition and I am delighted to welcome him to Newcastle United,” Howe said.
“He is an exciting young goalkeeper who has shown real promise during his time in France. He has a calmness and presence that belies his age, and he’s someone we feel can grow and improve within our environment.”
More signings to come
Newcastle’s imminent signing of Jaouen comes after they turned down an option to make Aaron Ramsdale’s loan from Southampton permanent for £20million this summer.
With Odysseas Vlachodimos also set to leave Newcastle after returning from a loan spell at Sevilla, Jaouen won’t be the only goalkeeper Newcastle sign this summer.
Nick Pope will be allowed to leave the club should a suitable offer be made. The Gazette revealed last week that talks had already taken place between Newcastle and Ipswich Town, with a £5million fee discussed.
Newcastle will also look to strengthen other key areas of the squad with full-backs, midfielders and wingers all under discussion.
Ewen Jaouen profile
Jaouen was born in Paris but moved to Brittany with his family at age five. After progressing through the ranks at Guingamp's academy, Jaouen was snapped up by Reims in 2023 before going on to make his senior debut during a loan spell at Rodez in Ligue 2 in 2024, aged 18.
He spent the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Dunkirk, scoring a crucial penalty in a famous Coupe de France shootout win over Lille.
