Ex-Premier League referee disagrees with Alan Shearer over Newcastle United decision

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher believes it was the correct decision to disallow Callum Wilson’s goal against Brighton.

The Magpies No.9 found the net 14 minutes in at the Amex Stadium but referee Graham Scott blew for a high boot on Lewis Dunk.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer believes Scott was too quick to blow his whistle, however Gallagher thinks otherwise.

He told Sky Sports Ref Watch: “The referee thought it was a high boot and he blew very, very early.

“You can see the Brighton players have stopped.

“I don’t think you can play a ball that high when a player goes to challenge with his head. It’s dangerous.

“In the Champions League, if any player lifts his foot above the knee will penalised.

“That’s above the shoulder, it’s too high. You’d rather it was given on-field than go to VAR.”

Shearer, speaking on Saturday’s Match of the Day, said: “I just thought the referee was far too quick to blow his whistle here. He blows it for dangerous play.

“The defender is a yard away from Callum Wilson. Dangerous play? The defender is nowhere near him!

“Everyone stops because the referee, in my opinion, goes far too quick.”

Wilson’s disallowed goal was as good as it got for Eddie Howe’s side on the South Coast with Nick Pope and some last-ditch defending seeing United hang on for a point.
